Technology and learning development

We discussed in class the importance of non-verbal cues and discussed the impact adolescence has on learning development (see below). We also talked about how technology can negatively impact social development because our focus is  removed from everything else.

So for our blog post using the above chart, pick one element of development under Early or Middle Adolescence and make an argument for or against using a phone in school. Then go online and find an article that supports or negates your position and give us a brief summary of what the article states.

For example: During Early Adolescence as my intellectual interests expand I need a phone to engage more with what I'm interested in studying. The article I found talks about how 75% of students using cell phones in class are performing worse than those without. https://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2016/04/do-smartphones-have-a-place-in-the-classroom/480231/

Please include a link to your source in the comment as demonstrated in the example above.

  2. In Early Adolescence, children ranging from 11-13 years old tend to focus more on the present than the future. They are constantly worried about the latest posts on social media. They have the urge to text and browse through the media world during school hours. They feel the need to be constantly updated with information. This prevents students from paying attention during class. If they are not focused on the lessons being taught, how could they succeed in the future? The article I found makes valid arguments for and against the use of cell phones during school. It states that phones are helpful to students who have difficulty learning in a classrom setting. It also states that Americans check their phones every 12 minutes. This makes it easy to understand why students are easily distracted. https://soeonline.american.edu/blog/cell-phones-in-school

  3. I believe that during Middle Adolescence, teenagers are going to want to start using social media and their phones more. Teenagers also feel like school is boring and when a teacher says they can use their phones for schoolwork, students take advantage of that privilege and go on social media and text. Teens sometimes feel that being constantly engaging in social media will make them popular and popularity is what almost all teens care about. The use of cellphones can affect students by distracting them a lot in school and changing their priorities from staying on top of all school work to now making sure you stay active on social media to gain more followers. This problem can be fixed if schools prohibit the use of cellphones during school. That way, students will prioritize school work more and prevent them from getting distracted easily.
